9 Ways Window Blinds and Coverings Will Transform Your Home

Window Blinds

inspiration: BHG

While I love the look of bare windows when the architecture and the view are beautiful, many rooms still benefit from the right window coverings.

Over the years I’ve learned that good blinds and window treatments can:

  • make a room quieter
  • offer privacy
  • enhance a room’s style
  • add texture
  • introduce color
  • soften a room’s overall feel and ambience
  • make a window read as larger or more substantial
  • reduce afternoon glare and protect fabrics from fading
  • help a house feel cooler in summer or cozier in winter

Window coverings really are like little miracle workers.

So far in this new house we’ve only installed one set of window coverings: the new bedroom curtains (I’ll share bedroom updates soon!). Otherwise, we’ve been getting by with makeshift coverings or nothing at all. That means early mornings in pajamas can involve awkward interactions with passersby and work crews—definitely a motivation to get more windows dressed.

I don’t want heavy, fussy treatments, but the afternoon sun can be blinding for an hour or so and will be intense in summer. Bedrooms and other private spaces also need coverings. With hardwood and tile floors, sounds travel easily; boys’ voices and dog barks become much louder in rooms without soft surfaces, so window coverings that add texture help quiet the house and make it more comfortable.

Several years ago we installed bamboo blinds in our kitchen and family room, and they transformed those spaces. I’d never ordered blinds online before, so I worried about fit and quality, but the custom options were easy to use and the finished product looked and operated beautifully. I was very pleased with the results.

I’m getting closer to deciding on window treatments for the new house. Installing blinds and shades will change the look and feel dramatically, and I’m excited to take that next step toward making the space feel cozier. The final choices will depend on each window’s size, placement and the view—some windows will wait until after remodeling, but many can be done right away. I’ll share inspiration pictures and plans soon.

Thank you for all the great ideas you shared about our kitchen and dining room remodel — your input has been so helpful. After considering all the options, I think I’ve finally landed on the best layout and arrangement for those spaces. That decision took time, but weighing every possibility has been worth it. I can’t wait to show the new floor plan, details and design direction.

Have a happy day, friends!
