I recently enjoyed revisiting the Seaside Sanctuary featured in the June 2008 issue of Architectural Digest. The setting, the uncluttered simplicity and the cottage gardens all capture a quietly elegant coastal lifestyle that feels instantly appealing.
Homes that suggest a particular way of living are especially compelling to me. Whether it’s a storybook castle, a relaxed beach cottage, or a well-loved historic house, the atmosphere and the rhythm of life each home implies are what draw me in. I often find myself torn between different visions of the ideal life because each holds its own distinct charm.
During summer, though, the seaside cottage always rises to the top of my list. To me, seaside cottage living means slowing down, breathing fresh salt air, enjoying simple meals outdoors, and centering days around family and ease. It’s a way of life that prioritizes presence and uncomplicated comforts.
Even if buying a classic beach cottage in Martha’s Vineyard or another coastal enclave isn’t possible, you can still cultivate that breezy, seaside feeling wherever you live. Dreaming about a particular lifestyle is useful because it gives you ideas you can adapt to your own home. You don’t need perfection or a big budget—what matters is creating spaces that reflect how you want to live. With thoughtful choices in color, texture, and layout, even a modest house in the city can feel like a coastal retreat.
Think about introducing natural materials, light colors, and casual, comfortable furnishings that invite relaxation. Add a few well-placed accessories that evoke the shore—woven baskets, linen textiles, and weathered wood finishes—to suggest a seaside mood without overwhelming the space. Outdoor dining, potted garden plants, and an emphasis on fresh air and daylight will further bring that seaside spirit into everyday life.
The essence of seaside living is less about location and more about an intention to slow down and savor simple pleasures. Whether your home is near the water or far inland, you can create moments of calm and connection that feel like a coastal escape.
I dare you to dream.
