Small Decorating Swaps That Transform Your Home Quickly

A few well-chosen accessories can transform the feeling of a room.

When I shop for new pieces, I favor timeless items that will complement my style for years. Choosing versatile, classic pieces makes seasonal refreshes and rearranging much easier. Ideally, they work across multiple seasons and settings.

Two of my favorite, simple decorating swaps are pillow covers and decorative vessels. Both look lovely on their own and can be refreshed with seasonal fillers.

Here are a few examples from my home:

This rattan footed basket is ideal for plants or seasonal florals, and it’s large enough to make a pretty, natural statement even when empty.

This vase gives a bit of height where I need it and even fits on a shallow mantel without feeling crowded.

This large vase is beautifully proportioned and works wherever I place it, adding sculptural interest to the room.

I love these linen-like blue pillow covers (sold in a set of two). They feel fresh for spring and summer but are subtle enough to use year-round—the fabric and trim are lovely.

Our brass door knocker has a small basket that’s perfect for adding seasonal touches at the entry.

These cane boxes under the entry table are endlessly useful. I move them to accent tables, place them on book stacks, or use them for storage and displaying small collections.

This large bowl looks attractive even when empty, and it’s fun to fill with fruit, greenery, or florals to suit the season.

Overall, everything feels classic and blends well with the pieces we already own.
