Elegant Subtle Striped Sofas for Modern Living Rooms

Neutral Living Room Decorating with Subtle Striped Sofa - Burnham DesignBurnham Design

I haven’t had much time since we moved in to sit and imagine the kind of furniture I’d love in our new house. Now that some of the bigger projects are behind me and I can finally breathe (yay!), I’m eager to settle in and start arranging the rooms. A little window-shopping spree feels inevitable this week.

Do you ever daydream about starting fresh with a blank slate and choosing the ideal pieces? I’ll mostly work with what we already own, but we sold a few pieces during the move and need to decide what fits best in this house. That means I might be hunting for a couple of new items — not a bad problem to have. I just need to figure out what those items will be.

While browsing Pinterest today I came across photos of subtly striped sofas. They’re lovely — understated yet able to introduce a gentle pattern among solid pieces. I’ve always liked pinstripes. I may not end up with a striped sofa, but I appreciate the look and how it adds quiet texture to a neutral setting.

This week I plan to try a few room experiments: removing furniture, testing different layouts, and sampling new color palettes and patterns to see what feels natural. When the movers placed everything, we mostly left pieces where they landed (though we did manage to hang a mirror). I’ve been eager to rearrange and make some changes, and a trip to the paint store is on the agenda. Repainting the first room will make the house feel more like home.

I still feel a little out of sorts and disconnected from the house, but I know I’ll find my way as I put my own stamp on each room.

It can take time for a room to come together so that it functions well and reflects your style, but it’s rewarding once you find the first puzzle piece. I’ve invited several blogging friends to share their inspired rooms over the next week or two. It’s fascinating to see how others develop their favorite spaces and how those rooms evolve — usually not overnight, which is encouraging.

I’ll be doing a roundup every few days starting later this week to showcase these inspired rooms as part of my book launch festivities, and I’ll invite you to share your own favorite spaces as well. I’ll post details soon.

Tell me in the comments how you felt when you first moved into your house.
