Do you enjoy summer entertaining?

Some summers I love hosting backyard gatherings; other years the yard feels less inviting and we don’t entertain much. Aside from a few firepit evenings and a couple of Fourth of July get-togethers, our backyard has mostly been quiet. The reason? It doesn’t feel private or cozy—yet.

We’re hoping to change that this season, though progress has been slow. Mostly my husband has been pulling weeds so we can reach a point where adding plants, seating, and decor will make sense. Without a landscaper, the work will take time, but we’re determined to make gradual improvements.

Why so many weeds? Why no gardener? Good questions—but we’re making steady, if slow, progress.

Even when the yard needs work, I enjoy planning how to make the porch and outdoor spaces pretty. That first photo with the big colorful lanterns is a favorite—eclectic, unpretentious and full of life. For me the fun of entertaining is not just gathering people but organizing and styling the space so it feels festive.

We picked up a few simple strands of outdoor lights for the deck—those little touches really set the mood. I’m also smitten with a small serving caddy I found; it’s adorable and practical. Presenting food and drinks in a contained, attractive way makes everything feel more intentional than piling things on a table.

And why stop at a caddy when you could have an entire serving island outdoors? That kind of built-in convenience would make entertaining effortless and stylish.

Realistically, I may not complete every project this summer—downtime is part of the season—but the updates we do make will be meaningful. Small changes can lift the space and make gatherings more enjoyable, which is a great summer goal.

I already ordered a new outdoor rug and umbrella for the back deck. I’m excited to add color now that my kitchen and family room palettes are settled. I like colors to flow from inside to outside, so the yard feels like a natural extension of the home. I’ve also added a few touches to our front deck; I’ll share the progress soon.

Color makes a big impact outdoors. Bright green cushions paired with blue accents feel cheerful and summery—simple choices like that instantly lift a porch.
