Create Destination Spaces at Home: Ideas for Every Room

I know it might sound a little odd, but I enjoy having little “destinations” around my home—nooks and corners I think of as getaways for reading, writing, or quiet time.

Take this sweet corner with the bright blue chair from Country Living. I love how it tucks into the corner with easy access to books. A spot like that becomes an inviting destination where you want to linger.

A lamp and a couple of ottomans beside the sofa make a living-room destination more inviting and comfortable. Creating a small, purposeful spot doesn’t have to be complicated or costly—just intentional.

Leave it to Martha Stewart to set up a standout coffee corner in her home. It’s a bit fancy, but it shows how a dedicated spot can elevate an everyday ritual.

My own coffee corner is simpler, but I enjoy having syrups, pretty creamers, and a variety of mugs on hand to make mornings feel special. It’s not as indulgent as grabbing a drink out, but having a place to go each morning adds a small, pleasant ritual to the start of the day.

Last summer I set up a tiny herb and potting station using a small gardening table in the yard. I’m already looking forward to planting season. Even without a green thumb, it was relaxing to step outside and snip fresh herbs. That little table created a purposeful place I actually enjoy visiting.

If you want to go further, you can make destinations more elaborate and decorative. A tropical-themed backyard or a carefully styled outdoor seating area can turn a boring yard into a vacation-like escape right outside your door.

Consider creating a spa-like corner in your bathroom as another kind of destination. Even modest touches—a deep tub, soft towels, a few candles—can make the bathroom feel like a small personal retreat when you need some downtime.

There are so many ways to create inviting destinations throughout your home. What corners or little retreats do you have, or hope to create?
