My Introduction:
I have a sweet blog friend, Charlotte, whose posts about tender memories of daughters often bring a tear to my eye. Our children have flown the nest, and her poignant recollections and gentle efforts to let go reflect many of my own experiences. She has a way of making me cry with a memory and then laugh with a quietly funny post. I love her blog. Beyond that familiar voice, I’m also getting to know Charlotte Lyons the artist, crafter, and author.
Charlotte has written books and been featured in numerous publications. I even own books with her name in them and only later realized the connection. Once I saw a cute snowman craft in a magazine and noticed it was by Charlotte Lyons—I paused, surprised to find her work there. She’s down-to-earth and delightful, and I’m pleased to have her here as a guest.

Recycled Napkin Rings by Charlotte Lyons
Last year I admitted I don’t cook much for Thanksgiving—I made the pies and focused on the table setting instead. Over time I noticed the image of the place cards I made from scraps became very popular with readers. Here I am again, approaching the holidays and hoping to inspire you with a quick, charming craft after all those family posts. These papercrafts keep me happily out of the way of those who do the serious cooking.
As with many of my projects, I began by checking the recycle bin. The napkin rings come from paper towel rolls. If you have one, flatten it and cut 2-inch sections. Keep the pieces a little flattened so they look less like rolls and won’t wobble on the table. Then decorate them with pretty paper scraps—sheet music, handwriting, or any attractive paper you have on hand.
Add a guest’s initial cut from a book, or a short phrase. A ribbon provides a colorful place to write a name, while kitchen twine or baker’s twine wrapped several times gives a simple, rustic look. Small embellishments make each ring personal and charming.
Once you start, the possibilities are endless. Use wallpaper scraps, yarn, fabric, buttons, letter tiles, old photos, lace, charms, or natural finds. A tiny sailing pin might suit him, while a sentimental brooch could be perfect for her. Mix textures and small keepsakes to create napkin rings that reflect each guest.
Wishing you a joyful holiday surrounded by loved ones. Enjoy the little moments—the crowded kitchen, the busy table, the comfortable couch—and the small tasks that make gatherings memorable. Those moments are the best part, especially when someone helps with the dishes. xoC
