Over the weekend we experienced a fierce wind and rain storm here in the Seattle area. I don’t mind storms when I’m safe inside, but part of this one had us crossing Puget Sound on the ferry—and I’ll admit I was a little nervous.
Waves crashed against the boat and splashed over the lower deck where we had parked. The ferry rocked and rode the swells while salt water hit our car in the dark. All I could think about was getting back to our warm, safe nest at home.
When we finally arrived it was completely dark—outside and in. The power was out. We moved quickly, lighting candles so we could find our way to bed. The glow of candles made the house feel cozy and secure; it was such a relief to be home.
Lighting candles as evening falls is one of my favorite autumn rituals. I love it on ordinary nights, and especially when a storm makes the world feel wild and unsettled.

Do you have a favorite fall candle? Last year I shared one of my go-to scents—Sweet Vanilla Cinnamon from Anthropologie.
