February Home Refresh: Leather, Copper & Wood Styling Tips

February is a great month to do a bit of house fluffing. I seem to say that in every season, but that’s because a quick refresh always restores my balance. When life gets busy, I want to stop for a minute, clean the kitchen, rearrange pillows, dust, polish surfaces and—especially in the cooler months—make the home feel cozier.

Spring cleaning and decorating will come soon, but for now simply cleaning and fluffing the house keeps me content.

I’ve been inspired by a book I recently read; the stories and homes it showcases are influencing my current decorating choices, even when they’re not exactly my personal style. I find myself wondering, “What would Furlow do?”—or WWFD—when I’m arranging things. His homes are layered with collections and interesting details. I don’t lean toward perfectly staged minimalism, nor do I like random clutter; I prefer a curated, collected look that feels intentional and meaningful.

Having lived in older houses my whole life, I appreciate that relaxed, well-traveled style—quirky, stately and comfortably worn. I change my mind about my ideal look often, and that’s part of the appeal: a home should evolve. A mix of old and new, layered textures and collected pieces tells the story of a home that grows with you.

My new leather sofa finally arrived and I love it. I’m a texture lover, so building the room layer by layer has been a joy. Warm copper and wood tones—copper pots, bamboo blinds, wooden cutting boards, the leather sofa and wood floors—create a cozy spectrum that contrasts beautifully with glossy white subway tile and white quartz counters. The juxtaposition of warm, tactile pieces with clean, smooth surfaces makes the room feel balanced and visually satisfying.

Last fall an incident with my white slipcovers prompted me to move away from so much white—at least for now—and add a warmer, textured layer with a leather sofa in the family room. Leather is timeless, and lately I’ve been craving richer textures and colors to complement the soft neutrals I use throughout the house. I’ve also refreshed my home office with a deeper navy, so layers and color are top of mind.

When we moved here, my old leather sofa went to our church because it was too large for our narrow family room. This time I chose a sofa scaled to the space: a six-foot loveseat with slightly rolled arms. It fits well in front of the fireplace and leaves room to walk around each side. I also love the nailhead trim—a classic detail that feels at home in both traditional and more modern settings.

Recently my parents offered a Persian wool rug they’d had in storage. Its coral, light blue and navy palette works beautifully in the space, and it felt like the right winter addition. I never feel bound to a single look; small changes—rugs, furniture or accessories—can evolve a room’s mood. Pairing the rug with the new leather loveseat and a tufted velvet ottoman created warm, layered comfort in the family room.
