Well hello — I’m Courtney, Melissa’s daughter. Some longtime readers might remember when I moved into a very small room (more like an office) on the entry level of my sister Kylee and brother-in-law’s townhouse in Seattle.
The room measures under 9 by 9 feet, with a sliding door on one wall and an angled corner that made it even cozier. At first I doubted a twin bed would even fit. With a little creativity and intentional choices, it became a comfortable, functional space I truly love.
It’s hard to believe I’ve lived here for almost three years. After college I began working my dream job at The Inspired Room full time, and I originally planned to document decorating the space as I went. Life happened—projects, blog posts, and a book—so I’m finally sharing the full reveal now. Better late than never!

As I publish this, I’m actually moving into my very first apartment. I’ve been looking for the right place in pricey Seattle and have taken my time. I’m excited to make a new space my own and will likely share more of that transition on Instagram and in future posts.
If you want a sneak peek of my new place, follow me on Instagram! I’ll be posting stories throughout the move and sharing more photos as I settle in.

Back to this little room: it’s been the coziest nest with wonderful natural light, its own attached bathroom, and a small but workable closet. I’ll show closet and storage details further down.
Daybed / Sisal rug
Intentional furniture choices were essential. The daybed was the first thing I knew I needed. I chose a model with usable storage underneath and filled it with cozy pillows, including three firm Euro shams in back. I plan to use this daybed as a sofa in my new apartment, just as I hoped when I bought it.

To the left of the bed is a compact shelving unit that works perfectly in the tight space. It displays books and accessories and holds a clamp light for reading. I left it freestanding rather than wall-mounted for flexibility.

A small ottoman topped with a mirrored tray doubles as a nightstand and coffee table. The lid lifts to reveal shoe storage, so it serves triple duty. Layering a sisal rug brought texture and a subtle pattern that grounds the room.

I used the angled wall for a compact console that acts as a mini entry table. Rectangular consoles felt too sharp in the small corner, so the curved shape with a lower shelf for books was ideal. A simple canvas artwork adds a personal touch.

String lights create warm, inviting light that I prefer over the overhead fixture. They add a cozy, magical feel in the evenings.

An amusing quirk of this layout: to reach my closet I had to make the bed every morning because my extra pillows were stacked in the corner. It was a helpful little domestic habit—an unmade bed would have been glaringly out of place in such a small room.
Closet organization included a tension rod, a hanging shelf system, a plastic drawer unit, and over-the-door hooks to squeeze the most storage out of the space.

The attached bathroom is small but perfectly functional.

One storage lifesaver was a freestanding wardrobe I customized with shelves and a soft-closing drawer. Closed storage keeps surfaces calm and prevents the room from feeling cluttered.

Adding a decorative gold handle required drilling—my proud DIY moment—and an over-the-door mirror helped bounce light and visually expand the room.

The hooks behind the door serve as a tiny mudroom for coats and bags. A shallow shelf above offers a place to style or drop keys and small items.

Layering rugs over the wall-to-wall carpet made the floor feel warmer and more intentional.

I’ll miss this little room. Homes hold memories beyond decor, and this cozy space sheltered a lot of life as I transitioned from college to full-time work. I’m grateful to my sister and brother-in-law for letting me rent it while I found my footing.
I hope you enjoyed the tour. I’m excited for the next chapter and the new apartment adventures ahead.
