Avoid This One Common Home Decorating Mistake That Ruins Style

There are countless chances to make mistakes in life — and decorating your home is no exception.

Perhaps you’ve made a few missteps yourself; I certainly have.

What is the most regrettable decorating mistake you’ve ever made?

Painted a room the wrong color? Ordered a sofa that didn’t fit the space? Bought a freestanding cabinet that wouldn’t fit up the stairs?

Those are just a few of the many possibilities.

One of the biggest regrets I see is when people don’t follow their own taste and heart.

Maybe your home doesn’t inspire you because you:

  • worry too much about what others will think.
  • follow someone else’s style or advice and choose items that don’t truly reflect you.
  • play it safe and pick things you think won’t offend anyone.
  • fear making a mistake.
  • don’t know how to pull together the pieces that feel right to you.
  • stay stuck and avoid making changes at all.

Decisions made from peer pressure, fear, or worry rarely result in a home that feels like yours.

Even when we follow our heart, we can still make mistakes — and that’s okay. Most design errors aren’t permanent. Trying things out, experimenting, and having fun with your space helps you discover what truly works and what you love. For big purchases it’s wise to think things through to avoid costly errors, but many choices can be changed or adapted, so don’t let fear stop you.

Often a misstep becomes a happy accident. A mistake can push you to be creative or try an unexpected solution that ends up being even better than your original plan.

Taking a risk or trying something different can bring your home closer to what really resonates with you.

When we create from the heart instead of worrying, the process becomes more joyful.

A home you love takes time to evolve; let the process be enjoyable.

A space that sparks joy and connection is worth taking a risk for, don’t you think?

What decorating mistakes have you made? Did any turn into a happy accident? I’d love to hear about them.

PS. I’ll share a happy decorating story with you in a week — it was an unexpected situation, and I absolutely love how it turned out!
