Yesterday I shared an older post called “Finding the Happy Medium in Design.” Rereading it reminded me that my tastes haven’t changed much: I prefer balance. For our house that means mixing calm, serene elements with a few lively accents. A well-balanced space feels both restful and interesting.
To me a serene room leans on textures, solids, and a limited palette with minimal bold patterns. A lively room, by contrast, brings in bright color, energetic patterns, and visual surprises. Both approaches are valid; your personal comfort determines how much energy you want in a space. The key is finding what makes you feel at home.

I enjoy the look of completely tranquil rooms in photographs, but living in an entirely neutral environment can feel flat for me unless there are spots of pattern or stronger color elsewhere. A few bold elements create interest and personality without overwhelming the senses. Conversely, rooms that are too busy feel chaotic; I appreciate restraint as much as playfulness.

Design is deeply personal. The styles or color schemes that appeal to you in photos may not be the ones you prefer living with daily. I love exploring different design approaches for inspiration — vintage, modern, eclectic, minimalist — because seeing a variety of solutions helps clarify what resonates with you. If you only follow a narrow set of sources, it can feel like there is only one “correct” look, but a broader view reveals endless options.

Looking widely at design shows how many creative ways people express themselves through color, pattern, and texture. Homes reflect personal stories, and that individuality is one of the most inspiring aspects of interior design. Bold choices, subtle layers, or a careful mix of both can all work beautifully when they reflect the occupant’s taste and life.
Your home should tell your story. Whatever mix of layers, colors, and patterns feels right to you is the right choice.
I love all the rooms featured here.

Let’s do a quick “get to know you” in the comments. Do you prefer a calm, serene look, a more lively aesthetic, or something in between? Introduce yourself and share where you land on the spectrum.
