I wanted to share a few recent updates from the Snug. Some of these I mentioned to my newsletter readers already, and a few are brand new. Small, slow changes are my favorite part of decorating—finding the right piece, rearranging items you love, or finally hanging something that’s been waiting for the perfect spot. Those gradual updates are what make a space feel personal.
A home takes time to evolve. It’s the layered, meaningful touches added over months or years that tell a story and make a room feel like a place of comfort and belonging. Here are the latest changes in the Snug.
Updated shelving and art
When we first moved in five years ago, these shelves held copies of the books I wrote. This year I decided to prioritize this room and restyle the shelves. I found two seascape canvases that bring soft color and a whimsical feel to the space. I also added two vintage blue-and-white platters I’ve collected over the years. I hung the platters using heavy-duty plate hangers and sturdy nails—simple hardware makes a big difference for safely showing treasured pieces.

When styling shelves, I look for items that add interest without clutter. A few well-chosen art pieces, layered with personal items, creates a curated, calm display rather than a crowded one.
Cozy daybeds
A few months ago we added gingham scalloped daybeds with trundles. After rearranging other pieces, we finally assembled them and love how they anchor the room. They make the Snug feel extra cozy—perfect for reading, napping, or hosting overnight guests. I covered them with soft white quilts that are easy to wash and keep the beds clean, especially with our dogs claiming them as their favorite spots.
We’ve also spent time on the less glamorous tasks that every room needs: taking down old artwork, patching nail holes, and touching up paint. These small maintenance steps prepare the space for fresh styling and make the final look feel thoughtful and finished.

Vintage oars and texture
One of my favorite updates is actually an old piece: a mismatched pair of vintage oars we’ve owned for years. They’ve traveled with us through different homes, and I love their patina and simple story. We mounted one oar on each side of a wall, using leather loops for a secure and attractive display. The oars add warmth, texture, and a quiet sense of history to the room.

Choosing accessories is about balance: selecting pieces that tell a story and contribute to the room’s atmosphere, rather than adding noise. Each object should earn its place visually and emotionally.

Television and lighting
On the other side of the room we replaced the old TV with a Frame-style television and a wooden frame that helps it blend into the decor. The picture quality is noticeably improved, and I enjoy changing the artwork displayed on the screen. The TV now sits above an antique Chinoiserie cabinet that once belonged to my grandparents, which gives the corner a layered, sentimental feel. Because that spot lacks space for lamps, I ordered wall sconces to soften the lighting and add another decorative layer.

Our cozy bed nook remains in the corner, and a washable rug has been perfect underfoot, keeping the area practical and pretty.
What’s coming next
There’s still more to do in the Snug. A new sofa is on the way, and I’m excited to show it when it arrives next month. I’m planning to hang a vintage quilt that belonged to my great-grandmother above the sofa as textile art; it’s been in my family for years but never displayed. To hang it, I ordered a simple curtain rod so the quilt can be shown off with care. I’ve also ordered bamboo shades that I think will add natural texture and privacy to the room.
I’ll share a full room update once everything is in place and we’ve finished styling.
