I’m excited to share recent updates to our bedroom. These simple, budget-friendly changes transformed the space into a cozy winter sanctuary using a few new finds from Walmart. Updating your home for the season can be affordable and easy when you mix existing pieces with carefully chosen new items.

Thank you Walmart for sponsoring this post!

We moved into this house in October but focused on settling in this January. Naming our bedroom project for “A Lovely January” gave me motivation to make meaningful, manageable updates without rushing. Working with what we already had while adding a few new pieces helped the room feel more intentional and welcoming.

Three simple updates to create a winter bedroom sanctuary:

1. Create a Mood-Boosting Ambience

Lighting is one of the most important elements for a warm, restful winter room. Even the prettiest bedding or paint won’t feel inviting if the space is only lit by an overhead fixture. Layered lighting—task lamps, table lamps, and sconces—makes a room feel cozy and livable in the evenings and on cloudy days.

We’re lucky to have ample natural light from the windows and glass doors, but lamps fill in the corners and add warmth. I added a brass pharmacy-style floor lamp that’s perfect for reading in the corner chair we already owned. It’s stylish and functional, improving both light and atmosphere.

To brighten the whole corner, I added a rattan table lamp on the side table. The round shape softens the vignette and complements the task lamp—together they make the space feel finished and cheerful in the evenings.

I also still love the bird-and-floral lamp we added last year; its color and pattern add personality. For bedside lighting, plug-in wall sconces were the best short-term solution because our bed sits between two doors and leaves only room for very small nightstands. The sconces provide light without crowding the space and their soft bronze finish blends with the room’s textures, offering a warm, understated look.

These lighting updates have truly changed the feel of the room—making it calmer, cozier, and more inviting.

2. Add Design Details that Pull Together Your Style

Consider the colors and textures that make you feel most at home in winter. I prefer a relaxed, refined look with layers of texture and subtle patterns. You don’t need to redecorate everything at once—let your room evolve by adding a few thoughtful details over time.

I added textured pillow covers with tassels, a warm chunky sisal rug, and a stonewashed blue cotton throw to complement pieces we already had. These small changes created a cohesive, cozy palette and enhanced the room’s winter vibe.

I also found a floating picture frame that makes it easy to switch artwork or photos seasonally, keeping the space feeling fresh without major effort.

3. Add Beauty and Function

A cozy winter room should be both beautiful and useful. I spend more time reading, relaxing, and working on projects at home in cooler months, so functional pieces are essential.

A woven jute ottoman adds texture and serves as a footrest or a place to set a book. Stackable white lidded boxes on the bookshelf look stylish and provide discreet storage for small keepsakes, photos, and jewelry. Choosing items that are both attractive and practical keeps the room clutter-free and comfortable.

What project are you working on this month? I hope these simple updates inspire you to refresh your space—you don’t need a full renovation to create a cozy bedroom for winter. Shopping thoughtfully for decor can make a big impact.

I’d love to see your projects—feel free to share them in the TIR Facebook community. I’ll be sharing more ideas for this room in the coming weeks.
