4 Practical Tips to Improve Your Home Office Setup

The Inspired Room - Hale Navy Home Office

TThis weekend I shared several inspiration images for functional, livable spaces. Today I want to share one of my favorite functional areas: my home office. These photos are from my previous house, and while I haven’t fully finished decorating my new office yet, I’m using many of the same ideas and lessons to shape the new space. The decor may change, but the principles that made the old room work will guide the next one.

I included this room and several photos in my book, The Inspired Room, but here I’ll highlight a few practical takeaways you can use when designing your own creative workspace or home office.

1. Designate a special space to be inspired, organized and creative.

When you work from home or manage family tasks, having a dedicated space makes a big difference. I learned early on that a designated office — even a small corner — helps keep me sane, organized and creative. Commit to carving out a spot in your home for work and planning, no matter how compact it must be.

2. Surround yourself with inspiration.

Your environment affects your focus and energy. When I designed this office I considered colors, textures and meaningful objects I wanted nearby. Inspiration boards above the desk, favorite fabrics and art all contribute to a productive atmosphere. Fill the space with things that make you feel motivated and calm.

3. Find organizational systems you can live with.

Organization only works if you actually use it. Pretty boxes and bins are useless unless they fit your habits, so test systems until you find what sticks. If something isn’t helping you stay organized, replace it with a solution that matches how you work. Practical, sustainable systems are worth the trial-and-error.

4. Create a homey environment.

Even though my office is where I run a business, I want it to feel like part of my home. I chose furniture and accessories that reflect my style while serving practical purposes — a rattan shelving unit from a secondhand store, an antique secretary desk, a generous lamp for soft light, and a comfortable chair. When your workspace feels welcoming, you’ll enjoy spending time there, and that comfort often boosts productivity.
