Ultimate Summer Bucket List: Fun Goals and Adventure Plans

Summer Bucket List - The Inspired Room Blog

Hi friends! Last Friday was my son’s final day of junior high—how did that happen? Next year he starts high school and I can hardly believe how quickly time passes. Even when you try to savor each moment, seasons seem to slip by. In just a week summer begins. I’m excited, though we may be moving so my excitement is tempered by a long to-do list. Still, I don’t want the season to rush past without making room for a few lazy, joyful days alongside the must-finish projects. Summer should include rest, sunshine, and simple pleasures.

Strawberry Barrel Garden - The Inspired Room

I’ve been snacking on strawberries from the yard by the handful. The harvest is small, but I’m celebrating it anyway. Growing even a little food feels meaningful, and I’m learning to enjoy the process without waiting for a dramatic “after” to feel satisfied. Life is in the journey, and I’m trying to linger there and appreciate every step.

To make sure this summer includes both productivity and pleasure, I made a summer list—a bucket list of sorts. I love lists, and this one helps me intentionally include easy, memorable moments even when life is busy. It may not be filled with exotic vacations, but I plan to tuck in plenty of carefree summer moments that feel like summer should: relaxed and full of simple delights.

Here are eight things I’m definitely putting on my list this summer:

Summer House Tour - The Inspired Room Entry

Summer puttering.

Puttering around the house is my favorite way to recharge. When I’m stuck in a slump, tidying, rearranging, or tackling a small update often renews my energy. This summer I’ll be rearranging open shelves, finishing decluttering and organization projects, rolling up rugs, and making small, satisfying changes. I’ll share updates as I go.

Minty Watermelon Lime Popsicle Recipe

Traditional treats.

Popsicles are one of my favorite summer memories: simple, nostalgic, and perfect for slowing down. In past years we made fun flavors like minty watermelon lime popsicles, and I hope to make more with the kids this summer. Cooking or making treats together creates moments I want to remember.

Summer deck maintenance.

Our back deck needs a refresh after Pacific Northwest weather and wear from our pets. A new coat of stain is at the top of the list, followed by some plantings and furniture rearrangement to bring it back to sun-soaked and welcoming. A little maintenance goes a long way toward making outdoor spaces feel inviting again.

The Inspired Room Backyard - Trex Adirondack Chair

Garden puttering.

Puttering outside brings a special kind of calm. I love pruning, potting, and tending flowers—even the occasional run-in with rose thorns. Being in the garden feels like a small retreat, and I plan to spend more time there this summer. Our yard’s little “secret garden” is coming together, and with a few final touches it will feel complete for now. I’ll be sharing the slow-but-satisfying progress and the eventual after photos.

Family nights.

Our backyard, with its firepit, is the heart of summer evenings—perfect for roasting marshmallows and lingering by the flames. Those slightly-charred marshmallows sandwiched with chocolate and graham crackers are a quintessential summer memory. We’ve already had s’mores once this season, and I expect many more relaxed family nights around the fire.

Cucumber and tomato salad with crispy chickpeas, ricotta & mint

Fresh food.

Summer meals shine with fresh ingredients. Light salads and seasonal produce make quick, healthy meals easy—especially when life gets busy. This summer I plan to keep fresh ingredients on hand and focus on simple, vibrant recipes that make healthy eating effortless.

Master Bathroom Before Mini-Makeover

Room refresh.

Longer daylight hours feel like extra time to get things done. Our master bathroom is next for a modest refresh—nothing extravagant, just a few updates to make it feel clean and renewed. I’ll use those bright summer hours to freshen the space in preparation for the next chapter.

Out to see.

We don’t travel as often as it looks like others do on social media, but we plan to set aside time for day trips and short getaways—family outings or couple time away. I’ll be traveling once or twice for work, but we’ll also carve out opportunities for local excursions and simple adventures close to home.

What will be on your summer list?

On Tuesday I’ll invite everyone to make a summer list and encourage each other to actually do the things we plan. It’ll be a fun nudge to be intentional about the season. See you soon!
