Christmas Is in the Air: Festive Decorating Ideas for Home

I wanted to make our home feel festive a little earlier this year. It seemed like a simple way to lift our spirits and make the season feel extra special. We mostly use items we already own—garlands, wreaths, a couple of small trees, paper snowflakes and tiny holiday houses. It really doesn’t take much to add a bit of joy.

There is no single right way to decorate for the holidays. Some people enjoy elaborate decorating, while others prefer a minimal approach. Do what feels right for you this year. Bring out familiar pieces that spark good memories, or try something different and leave some boxes in storage. It’s your home and your family, so trust what makes you happiest.

This year feels odd in many ways, so if creating a cozy, festive atmosphere makes things feel brighter, have fun with it. If decorating feels overwhelming, give yourself permission to do less. We could all use a little extra grace this season.

I’ve loved seeing photos from members of The Inspired Room Community—if you’re in that group, please share pictures of your home. It’s always inspiring to see how others decorate.

We had a few early mishaps: garland that fell in the kitchen, paper snowflakes coming down, and Jack snatching felt ornaments from the tree (as usual). Two steps forward, three steps back—such is our decorating process—but we’re making progress and enjoying it.

I’m planning a full Christmas tour on the blog, but here’s a small sneak peek of what we’ve done so far.

We made mason jar snow globes years ago and they’re still in use—simple DIY projects like that can become treasured seasonal touches.

I also added new striped curtains in the dining room that I love—the stitching detail is a nice touch and refreshes the space.

Our White Slipcovered Sofa

Jack and Lily are so cozy here when the fireplace is on, the tree lights are glowing and Christmas music plays. This room is where we spend most of our time; it’s warm and inviting and you naturally want to gather here.

I picked up a winter diffuser shaped like an owl—Snowy—who plays gentle white noise and comes with fun stickers and two oils. He’s adorable and makes a sweet gift, though I kept him for myself. The scents include a bright orange creamsicle and a calming blend for sleep.

There’s also a holiday starter bundle available for those who want a simple way to add seasonal scents to their home.

Similar Paper Snowflakes

Only one paper snowflake is still hanging—most of them fell down despite using Command strips. We may reattach them with thumb tacks. Paper snowflakes are an easy, charming decoration that add a handmade feel to any room.

A few readers asked where our white painted bookcase is located: it sits in the living room next to the dining area. It’s been great for both books and seasonal decor—perfect for looping garlands and displaying small white houses.

I’ll share more of our Christmas decor here on the blog and in my Instagram stories over the next few weeks.
