We’ve always rearranged lamps and lighting in our home. Do you? Whenever I move furniture or change seasonal decor, I reassess the lighting. The right light can completely change the mood of a room.

In the early years of our marriage we probably bought more lamps and fixtures than any other accessory. We enjoy hunting for charming pieces that create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Lighting shapes how a room feels as much as the furniture and textiles do.

Even now, if my husband walks in at dusk and I haven’t turned on the lamps he’ll tease, “Hey, girlfriend, why are you sitting in the dark?!” The evening ritual of switching on lamps still matters to us. I like rooms to feel deliberately lit, never shadowy.

I aim to have ambient light near every seating area and soft illumination around the room’s perimeter. Dark corners make me uncomfortable, so I layer light to ensure the space feels balanced and welcoming.

While task lighting is important for reading or working, I also value lamps that create a cozy ambience. A small accent lamp can transform a corner into a comfortable nook without overpowering the room.

For instance, I have two narrow cabinets in the living room that needed compact lamps. I recently added a pair of brass-and-white table lamps that are just the right scale for those spots — attractive, petite, and perfectly proportioned.

We don’t have overhead or wall lighting in the living room, so evenings used to be quite dark. Someday I’d like to add ceiling fixtures and sconces, but for now we rely on lamps. The pair I placed on the cabinets are the first I turn on each evening.

Lighting brings personality to a room, and choosing pieces that reflect your style makes a big difference. At the end of this post you’ll find an inspiration board with fixtures I love. Also consider bulbs — the right bulb completes the effect, and I share a tip below.

I discovered several beautiful fixtures from a lighting collection that I hope to add over time. A few of my favorites appear in the inspiration board below, showing how different styles and finishes can change a room’s tone.

Below you’ll also find source numbers corresponding to pieces in the board, to help you identify options and styles I like.

Lightbulb tip: Many bloggers prefer cool or bright white bulbs because they photograph with less yellow cast. For everyday living, I favor warm bulbs because they create a cozier, more inviting atmosphere.

For example, the bright white bulbs in our kitchen make the space feel clinical, so I rarely use them. Warm light from sconces or lamps creates a softer, more comfortable glow that’s better for evenings.

Do you notice how lighting influences the mood of your rooms?
