DIY Art: Framed Calendar Maps!
The other day I received an email asking about the artwork in my family room, and it made me realize I’d never really explained the framed maps on my wall. They tie in with our little theme of adventure — a reminder of places we’ve been and trips we’ve taken. Using map pages from a vintage calendar is an affordable, simple way to add color, texture, and personal meaning to a room.
About the pieces:
The center piece is a true art work created by an artist we discovered on a special trip to Hawaii. The surrounding pieces are cut from an old map calendar. I like choosing maps from places I’ve actually visited rather than selecting random designs. That personal connection makes the display more meaningful to me.
Framing and finish:
All of the frames are recycled finds that I roughly spray painted. I’m not concerned with perfection — if a print doesn’t fit a frame exactly or a little of the map slips behind the mat, that’s fine. Imperfections add character and keep the look relaxed rather than overly staged.

My camera battery died and I misplaced the charger, so these photos are a bit blurry — sorry. I’d take better shots if I could, but you can still get the idea of how the maps look in the space.
Hanging style:
I don’t use precise measuring techniques when hanging artwork. I generally eyeball the arrangement until it feels balanced to me, then nail them up. If something looks off later, I move a frame or two. My husband prefers measuring for perfect spacing, but I view measuring as a step that slows the creative process. I like a controlled yet slightly haphazard composition — a mix of symmetry and asymmetry that feels intentionally imperfect.
That said, I don’t want to overwhelm the walls. I aim for a clean presentation with enough breathing room so each piece stands out without cluttering the room.
Practical tips:
If framed pieces tend to shift or tilt, I use a small amount of poster putty behind them to keep them straight. It’s an easy, damage-free solution that helps maintain a tidy look over time.
Final thoughts:
These framed calendar maps are a budget-friendly, personal way to decorate. They bring color, texture, and memories to the room without needing perfect framing or exact placement. Are you precise with your picture hanging, or do you prefer a more relaxed, wonky approach like mine?
