While big projects like kitchen remodels are exciting, what I enjoy most is the simple pleasure of puttering. Puttering is easy, inexpensive, and low effort. It creates instant, visible changes and gives a chance to refresh your creativity. It’s not stressful or overwhelming—just a small, satisfying way to tend to your home when you need a little lift.

Puttering isn’t about big, dramatic changes. It’s the little things: swapping pillow covers, nudging a chair into a new spot to see how it feels, arranging flowers in a vase, or potting a fresh plant. These small acts feel like a short session of home therapy—refreshing without demanding a lot of time or energy.

If a new decorating idea comes to mind while I’m puttering, I usually file it away for another day so I can keep the session light and focused. A good puttering session typically ends that same day with a completed, small task—rather than leaving a room half-torn-apart and unfinished.

Perfection isn’t the goal. If I linger on flaws, it spoils the point of puttering. The idea is to enjoy the process and make small tweaks that improve how a space feels, not to achieve an impossible ideal.

I rarely prepare ahead for puttering. Planning sets expectations, and expectations can turn a simple, spontaneous activity into something pressured. For me, puttering works best when it’s casual and open-ended.

Puttering is a way of living more fully in the present. It’s not about copying trends or forcing a room to be something it isn’t. Instead, it’s about appreciating the space you have and finding small, meaningful ways to enjoy it every day.
Are you a putterer, too?
