Step Black!? Sometimes my headlines get a little silly, but the idea behind this one is serious: black-painted stairs can be a bold, stylish alternative to traditional stained wood.

A few photos sparked the thought. While browsing House Beautiful I kept noticing the same trend—stair treads painted solid black. It’s a striking look that seems to be appearing more often in contemporary interiors.

Have you ever considered painting your stairs black? I mean fully black, the kind of deep, pitch-black finish that makes a statement.

To me, it’s a refreshing option. If your stairs are worn or a remodel is on the horizon, painting them black can deliver a clean, modern result without a big budget. It’s an aesthetic choice that hides imperfections and creates visual contrast—especially effective when paired with light-colored walls, railings, or trim.

This is also a project within reach for many DIY enthusiasts. The key is preparation and patience: sand and clean the surfaces thoroughly, apply appropriate primers and paint, allow each coat to dry fully, and then let the final finish cure for at least a week before heavy foot traffic. Proper curing helps the paint harden and resist scuffs and wear.

Would you try it?

Will you step up to black stairs, or opt for a softer hue or natural stain instead?

Stay tuned: Tomorrow Melissa will share her dramatic red staircase before-and-after, weigh the upkeep differences between wood, painted steps and carpet, and reveal her makeover plans—which include BLACK stairs. Her firsthand experience will help anyone deciding whether painted stairs are the right choice.
