My New Rattan Serving Cart: How I’ll Use It in My Kitchen and Why I’m Excited

A few weeks ago I had a small epiphany that led me to unexpectedly buy a rattan serving cart—and I couldn’t be more delighted. When we designed our kitchen and dining area, I hadn’t planned to add any furniture beyond the dining table and chairs. But once the space was finished and we started living in it, the room revealed a spot that felt perfect for this little piece.

Sometimes you don’t really know how a room will come together until:

1) you try different arrangements, or
2) you spend time in the space rather than only looking at plans.

That is how this rattan serving cart found its place in our home—it felt meant to be. Below I’ll share why it works for us, how we plan to use it, and what it brings to the overall design.

Although I love freestanding furniture for storage and character, we intentionally kept built-ins in mind while designing this open layout. Our rooms are small and connected, and several walls contain French doors, so built-ins made sense to maximize storage and keep the floor plan open. That strategy left fewer spots for additional furniture, but it also created a clean, airy flow that we wanted.

That said, once the space was complete and we lived in it for a bit, the right corner revealed itself. The rattan cart is the perfect in-between element that bridges the kitchen side and the dining area without blocking sightlines or traffic. It blends with the warm textures in the room—wood floors, cutting boards, metal fixtures—while contrasting softly with the creamy cabinets and natural stone surfaces.

The cart wasn’t part of the initial plan, but it fits so naturally that it feels like it was always meant to be there. I believe rooms evolve—often for the better—when you allow them to, rather than forcing every detail in advance. If you’re patient and open to experimenting, a space will show you what it needs.

A few months ago I shared an inspiration post about rattan bar carts, never imagining we’d have room for one here. My mom had a rattan cart for years, and I’ve always loved the look. Standing in our finished dining room, it suddenly made sense: a small, carefully scaled cart would work perfectly.

To test the idea, we temporarily placed a similar cart—one we already had for the porch—near the dining area. It was slightly too large, but it proved the concept: a cart of the right size and proportion would be useful and attractive. Soon after, I found a rattan serving cart that matched the color, scale and shape I wanted, and it was on sale, so I ordered it right away.

The cart is just the right size—neither too big nor too small. It creates a subtle transition from kitchen to dining area and reinforces the warm, layered palette of the room. Functionally it’s handy for everyday items and seasonal styling, and visually it adds texture and softness without cluttering the space.

My goal for this kitchen was a welcoming, classic and timeless feeling—like a room that has always been part of our family home. Adding pieces over time helps achieve that lived-in, collected-over-years aesthetic. Even though the kitchen and cart are new, they already feel more familiar each day.

How we’ll use the rattan cart and what’s on it now:

I’m excited to style the cart seasonally and use it for everyday convenience. Right now it holds cloth napkins, small trays, trivets, coasters, a wood cutting board, a vase of flowers, and wood-handled flatware that’s pretty and practical. The lower shelf is a great spot to lean framed art or to display potted plants and seasonal decor. For gatherings it will be perfect for setting out dishes or desserts, and it’s easy to move where needed.

Happy start to the nesting season! We’re settling in and enjoying the cozy moments at home. I’ll be sharing more updates and styling ideas as the seasons change—thanks for being here.
