Laundry and Craft Room Design Ideas for My New Home

The Inspired Room Laundry Room Before

What a week — technology has not been on my side. Between a broken dryer that left laundry draped around the house and a blog meltdown that had me racing to rebuild things (with huge help from my patient tech person, Ted), I’m ready to focus on pretty and pleasant things. Shall we?

Scroll through to see the laundry room in its current state and a collection of inspiring laundry and craft room photos at the end.

I’m walking you through several rooms in our new house so you can see what we’re working with: the strengths and the challenges, plus inspiration that might shape each space over time.

As I explore each room I’m getting a clearer sense of the house’s overall style and what it wants to become. I’ll share a post soon outlining the vision for the whole home — it’s so fun to dream!

So far I’ve shared inspiration for our entry and our living room. Today, since laundry has been on my mind, let’s head downstairs to the laundry room so you can see where I’ve been spending time.

It’s already one of my favorite spaces in the house, and I can’t wait to update it.

Although the laundry room is in the basement, it’s far from the typical dark or dreary basement laundry. It’s light, cheerful, and surprisingly pleasant to use. Even with a broken dryer, this room feels full of potential. Imagine it as a charming laundry-and-craft room or a combined mudroom and laundry space — can you see it?

Here are some of the pros:

  • Attractive tile floors
  • Ample cabinet and counter space
  • Two windows that bring in natural light
  • Generous room size

Issues to address:

  • Broken dryer
  • Washer is on a pedestal that makes loading difficult for me
  • Exposed plumbing on one wall
  • No laundry sink currently — something to consider adding later

Ideas to consider:

  • Replace or refinish the counters
  • Update cabinet hardware
  • Add millwork for a more finished look
  • Improve lighting with new fixtures
  • Create functional, attractive organization systems
  • Add decorative accessories to warm the space
  • Include a workspace for crafts or projects
  • Introduce a fun, durable rug
  • Replace the mirrored closet doors for a cleaner look

Cosmetically this space is already inviting, which made moving in so much easier. Many updates will be simple and affordable, so I’m excited to make it our own over time.

The room connects to a tiled hallway that leads up to the lower family room and provides access to the garage and a bathroom. That hallway could serve as an extension of the laundry’s functional space.

The hallway offers more opportunity for storage, hooks, or a drop zone.

I love that the hallway provides extra wall space for personalized organization and decorative touches.

The existing paint is a pleasant gray-blue, which I’ll keep for now while I focus on function first. There are outlets wired for sconces, and I’m already imagining what that wall could look like once we add lighting and details.

I’ve pulled together inspiration photos that might spark ideas we can mix and match to create a perfect family laundry room. Which ideas do you like? Enjoy!
