I have several types of faux garland and enjoy each for different uses around the home.

The garland on the counter is a pine variety. These garlands come in multiple lengths and in two main versions: the original and the deluxe.

The counter garland is the deluxe pine, which is noticeably fuller than the original pine version.

I also own a faux cedar garland. Cedar has a more drapey, relaxed look compared with pine—its stems and needles fall more softly.

Beyond pine and cedar, there are many other garland styles and embellishment ideas to explore, including eucalyptus and mixed-green looks.

How to choose the right faux garland for you

Here are some things to consider:

Decide the effect you want and where the garland will be placed. Consider whether you prefer a simple, airy drape or a fuller, lush appearance.

Think about weight and structure: heavier garland can create a dramatic look but requires stronger hanging points, while lighter garland works well for mantels, stair rails, and delicate fixtures.

Consider the type of greenery you like—pine tends to look fuller and more classic, while cedar has a softer, more relaxed silhouette.

You can combine different garland strands to create a unique or fuller composition. Mixing textures or layering two styles often gives the most natural, rich result.

If you want a full look without combining strands, choose a deluxe or fuller version of garland rather than doubling up on thinner pieces.

Always measure carefully before ordering. Add extra length for draping and swoops so the finished look fits the space—running short or having far too much excess can both be frustrating.

Popular garlands can sell out early, so if you find a style you like, order soon and double-check available lengths.

Mixing garlands and real greenery

You can layer two or more types of garland together to build texture and fullness. I often mix faux strands with real greenery for certain outdoor applications—real garland can be lovely on a porch but dries out faster indoors.

Using faux garland inside helps control costs and reduces yearly waste, while allowing you to add seasonal accents like sprigs, pinecones, or ribbon for variety.

This year I also ordered a set of pine branches to add extra dimension to certain arrangements and will share photos of how I use them.

For inspiration, look back at previous holiday decorating posts to see how garlands were mixed and styled—these examples show a variety of ways to combine textures and greenery for a cohesive seasonal look.

I favor simple, green-based decorating, so quality faux garland is a seasonal staple I return to year after year.
