Autumn Nesting: Cultivating a Cozy Fall Mindset

Fall Nesting - The Inspired Room

HHello, dear friends, and happy nearly FALL! I’m so glad you’re here. Welcome to my annual Fall Nesting Series. If you couldn’t guess, fall is my favorite time of year.

If you’re reading this after 2025, you’ll notice this post is part of a long-standing practice of sharing seasonal rhythms on the blog — something I’ve done since 2007. This particular series originally ran in 2011, and although I no longer live in the same home featured then, my love of fall nesting and creating a sanctuary in every season remains unchanged.

More recently I began inviting kindred spirits into HomeBody Gathering Place, a private community where we experience the joy of creating sanctuary together. Inside this cozy space I share weekly Home Therapy sessions focused on home rhythms, decorating ideas, and simple skills, along with practical tools and creative resources to help you love where you live. The Inspired Room blog will always be a free resource — I still share here regularly — but if you’re seeking more personal guidance and organized methods to create lasting change, HomeBody Gathering Place offers a warm, encouraging environment to nurture both home and self.

Doesn’t the first day after Labor Day just feel like fall? Even if it doesn’t feel like fall where you are, that’s okay. Fall nesting here isn’t tied to weather, a date, or our current mood. Fall nesting is first and foremost about cultivating an autumn mindset for our home — and we can start that today.

This series has been a yearly practice for many seasons. It’s not a race to display the earliest pumpkins or to keep up with someone else’s timeline. Instead, it encourages slowing down and resisting the pressure to have everything at once. Breathe. We can slow down and refocus on what truly matters.

Cultivating an autumn mindset means quieting the noise of what everyone else is doing so we can enjoy the simple pleasure of creating our own cozy sanctuary.

Fall Nesting Series 2018 The Inspired Room

Fall nesting is the gradual evolution of our home through the season.

Like the shift in nature outside, changes in our home can be subtle and intentional. There’s no need to rush or complete everything in a day. Fall nesting asks us to notice what we already have and to savor the comforts that support our well-being. It’s a chance to make mindful choices that serve us now and in the coming months.

Fall nesting is an opportunity to nurture ourselves.

This season invites us to bring into our surroundings what comforts and inspires us. Sometimes that means adding something new, and sometimes it means letting go of items that no longer serve us. It can be as simple as rearranging what you already own, paring down excess, or layering cozy textures and colors that create the mood you want.

Fall nesting is about honoring comforting rituals.

It’s focusing on ways to nourish and gather the people we love. It’s the art of pleasant puttering around the home, awakening our senses to savor details, and expressing gratitude for the season we’re in. Small, intentional rituals help our homes feel more inviting and our lives more content.
