5 Cozy Ways to Add Hygge to Your Home

I’m going to say it: I’m 100% ready for fall. October is here, the furnace kicked on today, and I’m settled into a sweater and cozy socks because I’m perpetually cold (and yes, the sun was out—still cold!).

Bring on all the Hygge things—I’m here for it. In Seattle we usually enjoy lovely autumn weather, but even when the forecast is mild, October is when I fully shift into a cozy-at-home mindset and look for ways to make my space feel warm, welcoming, and comfortable.

Here are five simple ways to bring Hygge-style coziness to your home. I hope these ideas inspire some fall nesting this week!

Warm knit blankets

There’s no better symbol of comfort than a chunky knit blanket. Our goldendoodle Jack knows the drill—curl up under a heavy throw and stay put. A soft, oversized knit adds texture and warmth to any seating area and instantly invites lounging, napping, and lingering with a book or a cup of tea.

Mood lighting

Good lighting changes everything. Lately I’ve noticed many staged designer rooms without lamps—personally, I think they’re essential, especially in fall and winter. Lamps and soft ambient lighting create a calm, intimate atmosphere that overhead lights can’t match.

My evening ritual is to turn on lamps around the house and dim the main chandelier. A few well-placed sconces, table lamps, or plug-in lights give rooms depth and warmth and make evenings feel slow and special.

Lighting inspiration comes from mixing layered light sources—wall sconces, table lamps, and dimmable fixtures to create a cozy glow.

Cozy corners

Creating a small cozy corner is an easy way to introduce Hygge without overhauling a whole room. A dedicated nook feels manageable to set up and becomes an inviting spot you actually use.

Scout out a quiet corner by the fireplace, beside a window, or an overlooked niche. Start with a comfortable chair, add a plush throw, a supportive pillow, a nearby lamp, and a basket for books, a journal, or a favorite craft. These small touches make it effortless to curl up and relax.

Comfy slippers

When temperatures drop, warm slippers are essential. A quality pair keeps your feet cozy and makes home feel like a refuge. Look for soft, cushioned slippers with a supportive sole so they’re comfortable for around-the-house wear.

Flickering candles

Ivory Candles // White Candles

Nothing rivals the soft glow of candles for creating a cozy mood. If you prefer not to use real flame, realistic battery-operated candles with real wax and moving wicks provide the same flicker without the safety concerns. They’re a great way to enjoy candlelight every evening.

For fragrance, diffusers with non-toxic essential-oil blends add seasonally appropriate scents without combustion. A few drops of warm, autumnal blends—think cinnamon, clove, orange, or clary sage—can make your home smell comforting and inviting.

PS: I just returned from a trip to Salt Lake City, and this week officially begins our empty-nest season. I’ll share updates soon—thanks for being here and for joining me in cozying up the house!
