We’d been searching for a new chair for our family room for a couple of years. For a time we used an IKEA slipcovered chair because it was affordable and available immediately. I liked that I could bring it home the same day, but after about a year it became clear it wasn’t the right fit. The slipcover attracted fuzz, wasn’t as easy to clean as I hoped, and the chair’s wide, squat profile didn’t suit the space. Thankfully we were able to donate it to our church, which was happy to have it.
This time around I decided not to settle. I was open to waiting for a more custom upholstery option if it meant getting a chair that fit our needs and style. Because the chair would live in the family room and likely be moved around, durable upholstery was a priority. I also wanted a wingback design—a high-backed chair would make the room feel cozier and more balanced. It was a bit of a departure for me, since I usually reuse or repurpose pieces, but it was fun to be choosy about details for once.
After searching widely, I found a wingback chair with tasteful nailhead trim from Ballard Designs. The chair’s graceful curves appealed to me from every angle, and I was thrilled to learn it could be ordered in Sunbrella fabric. After some deliberation I called Ballard Designs, placed my order, and they kindly sent the chair as a gift in exchange for me sharing it here. I was more than happy to accept.
When the chair arrived—sooner than expected—I was excited to set it up in the family room. It was exactly what I hoped for. I chose Canvas Gray Sunbrella fabric with Dove Grey legs. The fabric looks and feels great, and I no longer worry about spills or pet hair. The chair fits beautifully beside our fireplace and instantly elevated the cozy feel of that corner.
