In my previous post, “A Slower Rhythm Through the Seasons,” I introduced our annual fall nesting series and shared why easing into each season can benefit both your home and your well-being. A gradual transition from one season to the next helps your space feel intentional and calm. If you missed that post, it’s a helpful complement to these decorating ideas.
Today I’m sharing simple, practical ways to transition your decor from summer to fall.
You don’t need to replace everything or buy a full set of new decorations. Small, thoughtful changes will refresh your home and make it feel ready for cooler days. You may already have many of these items at home, or you can add one or two pieces to create a subtle seasonal shift.
Here are 7 simple tips for fall decorating.

1. Add layers for a snug, cozy feel.
As spring removes layers to lighten a space, autumn is the season to add them back. Incorporate woven textures such as rattan and seagrass, which feel warm and versatile year-round. Use woven trays on coffee tables, dressers, or nightstands to corral books and accessories and to introduce texture and warmth.
2. Introduce warmer tones slowly.
Even if your usual palette leans neutral or cool, adding a few warm accents signals the change in season. Small touches—like a book spine in muted rust or soft green, a branch of fall foliage, or a pillow in a warmer blue—can shift the mood without overwhelming your established style.
3. Swap pillows and rugs.
Use zippered pillow covers to change styles quickly. Choose softer, cozier fabrics or a subtle autumnal color to freshen seating areas. Consider adding a rug to bare floors or layering a lighter rug over a sisal base. Lightweight rugs are easy to switch out seasonally and can introduce pattern and warmth.
4. Keep foliage natural and organic.
Replace bright summer blooms with more muted, seasonal florals and foliage. Hydrangeas and many leaves take on softer tones in late summer and early fall—let nature guide your choices. Swap fresh or faux arrangements for colors that reflect the season for an authentic, grounded look.
5. Layer ambient lighting to change the mood.
As days shorten, ambient lighting becomes essential to create a cozy atmosphere. Add table lamps, floor lamps, and reading lights to warm dark corners. Overhead lights are practical but don’t create the same inviting glow that layered, lower-level lighting does.
6. Make your environment feel cozier with small comforts.
Little touches can make staying in on a cool evening feel special: flickering battery-operated candles, a favorite book, a soft throw, and a mug for a warm drink. These simple elements invite relaxation and make home feel intentionally comfortable.
7. Use subtle visual cues for inspiration.
Swap or add a few accessories that hint at fall—botanical art, a small framed landscape, or a tabletop easel with seasonal artwork can set the tone without a full redesign. Even leaning one or two fall-inspired pieces on a shelf or mantel can provide the visual cue your space needs.
Happy August—enjoy these gentle ways to bring fall into your home.
