Tabletop & Mini-Container Gardens
You may already know I’m not one for long, complicated DIY projects. I prefer quick, enjoyable tasks that end with something pretty and useful—inside or out. If a project takes too long I tend to lose interest and move on. So I stick to projects that are fast, fun and low-stress. Sound familiar?
One of my favorite types of projects is a five-minute mini container garden. These small arrangements are perfect for tight spaces or renters because they don’t require digging or permanent changes. They’re fast to make, easy to move, and bring a lot of joy for very little effort.
Today I’m sharing five of my favorite 5-minute mini gardens.
I absolutely love these little gardens. They make me smile every time I see them, and making them was just as pleasurable—no frustration, no half-finished projects. Each of these took minutes to create and was entirely stress-free.

5 Minute Garden Idea #1:
A small pot planted with Corsican mint is an instant winner—the scent is amazing. I added a little wire topiary ornament for charm. This took me maybe two minutes to assemble. If you don’t have a wire ornament, use a small porcelain bird or any little figurine you already own. The key is simplicity and a container you like.

5 Minute Garden Idea #2:
No ornament? No problem. A puff of moss alone—like Emerald Isle spikemoss—looks lovely in a small pot. No fuss required and it still looks intentional and fresh. This one literally takes a minute.

5 Minute Garden Idea #3
A little glass terrarium or jar makes a charming tabletop garden. I picked up a small terrarium at an event, but any clear jar will do. Fill it with a base of pebbles for drainage, add soil, then tuck in a small creeping plant—something like Scleranthus biflorus or another low-growing option—and a tiny accent, such as a miniature chair or figurine. This takes about three minutes and makes a sweet indoor piece.

Because it’s enclosed, a terrarium can be especially forgiving indoors. It’s also easy to customize with different plants and little decorative touches.

5 Minute Garden Idea #4
Use a crate, toolbox, old wood drink crate or any shallow container to create a mini garden. I gathered a few small plants—Corsican mint and sweet woodruff—then added rocks, a starfish and a mason jar with a striped candle for a summery touch. Mix and match what you already have; the goal is an appealing, casual composition that takes only a few minutes.

5 Minute Garden Idea #5
A little fairy garden in a wooden box is another quick favorite. I originally made one last year and this year refreshed it with succulents and a clump of flowering grass called Victor Reiter sea thrift. Updating an existing mini garden often takes only a minute or two—swap plants or add a fresh accent and it feels new again.

Teacup Garden!

Don’t stress about keeping these little gardens alive. I don’t have a perfect green thumb either, so I experiment and learn as I go. Most of the plants used here are hardy if you prevent them from completely drying out. Keep containers out of direct, intense sun—under a porch roof or umbrella is ideal—or bring them inside during extreme heat and place near a window. Keep the soil slightly moist; that’s usually enough. If a plant doesn’t survive, replacing it is inexpensive and part of the fun.

These might be “5 minute gardens,” but they should last all summer and many can come back next year. If I can do this, anyone can. Get out and enjoy some gardening—you’ll be glad you did.
So, what do you think?
Are you intrigued by these five-minute gardens? They’re whimsical, fun and easy to make. I hope you enjoyed seeing them as much as I enjoyed creating them!
