HHello! It’s Courtney here. I can’t believe it’s been about three months since I moved into my very first apartment.
When I began planning the move, my design-loving heart immediately started imagining decorating ideas. I began with the basics and a few accessories I’d collected over the years, and I was pleased with how cozy the place felt right away.
If I’ve learned anything from watching my mom transform homes, it’s that creating a home takes time. Little by little I’ve made this space more personal, and now that it’s fall nesting season, I’m focused on making things even cozier.
The last time I shared my apartment here, a reader commented that it looked like a “happy place.” I loved that—so I started thinking about how to intentionally create a home that sparks joy. Who doesn’t want that?

Here are 4 ways to make your home spark joy:
1) Sprinkle in memories
There’s something special about looking around your home and seeing items that remind you of family, friends, pets and travels. Those objects tell the story of your life and the people who matter most. Personal mementos set your home apart from a showroom; they make it feel lived in and meaningful.
While possessions aren’t the most important thing, the items you choose with intention can bring real joy. I’m excited to have my own kitchen and dining area, and one of my goals is to invite people over often. My cheese board, personalized with the word “feast,” is a small reminder to gather around the table and make new memories.

Calendars and custom art featuring the smiling faces of loved ones are an easy way to spark joy every day. A personalized memo board inspires me and also makes a thoughtful gift. I found lots of ideas to honor memories and friendships through customizable items.

2) Decorate with positivity
Filling my home with positive reminders is an intentional choice. I love seeing motivational words and quotes that encourage a hopeful outlook, especially on days when life feels heavy. Small customized accessories can keep that positive energy present in your daily routine.

A few of my favorite customized pieces include:
- A sherpa throw blanket that says “Cozy Vibes Only” — perfect for chilly nights and a visual cue to relax.
- A catch-all tray labeled “No Bad Days” that keeps keys and small items in one place.
- A cutting board engraved with “Feast” to inspire gatherings and shared meals.
- A biscotti jar labeled “Treat Yourself” as a daily reminder to savor small pleasures.
Think about your own life mottos and how they might be incorporated into your surroundings. Personal touches can turn functional items into meaningful decor.

3) Set the right mood
A joyful home doesn’t have to follow a one-size-fits-all look. For some, joy comes from bright, colorful spaces; for others, a moody, cozy atmosphere feels most comforting. Maybe an eclectic collection of travel finds sparks your happiness, or a minimalist setup calms your mind. The key is to choose the mood that makes you feel good.
To get started, make a list of words that describe the feeling you want in a room—cozy, calm, energetic, collected—and let those words guide your choices. When your space reflects the mood you love, it becomes easier to relax and enjoy being at home.

4) Create stress-free zones
Whether you’re naturally tidy or more scattered, having organized spots for essentials reduces stress. There’s nothing joyful about scrambling for your phone or keys when you’re already late. Simple organizational habits—like a designated tray for daily items or a memo board for important reminders—make days run smoother.
Making organization attractive and personal helps you stick with it. I keep a small dish labeled “No Bad Days” by the door to hold my phone and keys so I can start the day calm and prepared.

When you’re looking for a unique gift or something special for your own home, consider custom items that combine utility with sentiment. Thoughtful packaging can make a personalized gift feel even more special.

Bringing joy into your home is about intentional choices—selecting objects that reflect your life, displaying messages that lift your spirits, and shaping spaces that put you at ease. Small updates add up; over time they turn a house into a place that truly feels like yours.
