31-Day Autumn Series — Day 16: Chic Pumpkin Decor Ideas

House and Home

Last autumn I felt a little adventurous and decided to try something different from the usual carved scary faces. I wanted a more refined look for some of my pumpkins. (My son, of course, still prefers the classic spooky faces.)

House and Home

I was drawn to the idea of using upholstery tacks to decorate pumpkins and gourds. They’re simple to apply, add texture and sparkle, and make great centerpieces or porch accents. They feel a little “tacky” in the best possible way — playful and stylish at once.

This year I noticed another elegant technique (it’s not brand new, I’m just a bit slow to catch on).

Try using a drill to create precise patterns and designs in a pumpkin or gourd, like the examples shown above. The effect is clean, modern, and surprisingly striking when lit from within.

They’re so fun and versatile.
