When our children were small, we used to spend weekends and holidays at a family beach house on the Oregon coast. We no longer own that vacation property, but thankfully our current home sits right on the shoreline, so every day feels a bit like a seaside getaway. Coming home to our own “beach house” is a joy in every season.
I especially love this small guest room. I wrote almost my entire new, not-yet-released book there. (Coincidentally, it shares a title with Joanna Gaines’ new book HomeBody — a funny coincidence since my book covers a very different topic. I’ll share more details soon.)
This room has become a personal retreat within our home. I enjoy being at home, and having a quiet corner to close the door on the noise of dogs and boys is a real treat. Do you have a space like that in your house? A place to slip away for a few peaceful moments?
The sign in this room was custom-made by Between You and Me Signs as a gift, and I loved it so much I hung it here until I could deliver it. I also have several pieces of artwork with encouraging quotes and passages; meaningful art adds warmth and personality to a home, and I’ve written more about that elsewhere.
Hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July (for our U.S. friends)!

PS — you can also spot our new plantation shutters in these photos. I’ll share more about the shutters in future posts, but if you’re interested in where we ordered the shades and blinds used throughout our home, I previously included that information on the blog.
