One of my favorite places is Butchart Gardens in Victoria. Have you been? I always find so much joy among the plants and flowers. Earlier this year my husband and I visited a stunning tropical botanical garden in Hawaii — even in January the colors and foliage were breathtaking. I’ll be sharing a post about that visit and the garden soon.
I love gardening almost as much as I love decorating — perhaps even more. There’s something restorative about being outdoors, digging in the soil and soaking up sunlight. Whether it’s the physical activity or the calm that plants bring, I’m happiest when I’m working in or wandering through a garden.
That said, “I love gardening” might sound grander than it is. I love visiting gardens, driving through neighborhoods to admire landscaping, planning my own yard and spending time in it. I enjoy browsing garden centers and trying new plants. I’m no expert gardener, but you don’t have to be an expert to appreciate plants and the benefits they bring.
From the moment I first saw this house I fell for the property. It already had several established spring-flowering trees — lilacs, camellias, hydrangeas and a magnolia — which made it feel immediately welcoming. Since moving in we’ve added more hydrangeas, peonies, climbing roses, star jasmine and other flowering plants. Some have thrived, some haven’t, but we’re learning with every season.

Lily’s Garden
We always have a long list of outdoor projects and look forward to spring through fall when we can get to work. We plan to expand our vegetable garden — we love growing our own lettuce and herbs — and to continue improving the side and backyard flower beds. Curb appeal and front-yard landscaping are high on our list as well.
Jack and Lily enjoy the outdoors as much as we do. They spend their days chasing butterflies, exploring the beds and napping in sunny spots. Who can blame them? A garden is the perfect place to relax and play.
