Cleaning and Housekeeping Tips
Summertime should be about enjoying sunshine and downtime, but the house still needs attention. You don’t have to spend all day cleaning to keep your home comfortable — a little planning and efficiency can make your home “clean enough” and leave more time for summer fun.
My approach is what I call speed cleaning.
Speed cleaning means organizing your tasks and working efficiently so the house gets clean enough in a short time. The goal is to free up more hours for outdoor activities while keeping the home pleasant and tidy.

Here are practical speed cleaning tips to help you clean faster and smarter.
1. Establish daily routines
Keeping a few basic daily routines prevents clutter and makes cleaning manageable. Simple, consistent habits stop tasks from piling up and make the rest of your chores faster. Find a short set of daily tasks that work for you and stick to them — you’ll notice a big difference in how much you need to do later.
2. Dress for action
Your clothes influence how productive you feel. For many people, including me, pajamas encourage lingering and slow starts. Wearing shoes, practical clothes, or an apron signals it’s time to work and helps you move through tasks more quickly. If you feel more capable dressed for activity, take advantage of that little psychological boost.
3. Stay focused
It’s easy to let a short task expand into an hour of unnecessary detail. Use a timer to set clear limits and keep yourself on track. Short bursts of focused work reduce distractions and prevent perfectionism from eating up your time.

4. Keep supplies handy
Store cleaning supplies where you use them. Running back and forth for supplies creates interruptions that often lead to distraction. A small caddy or stash in each bathroom and nearby rooms makes it easier to start and finish tasks without detours.
5. Clean as you go
Cleaning little things throughout the day prevents big piles of work. At first it may feel like you’re always tidying, but it quickly becomes habit and saves hours later. Here are useful clean-as-you-go practices:
- Clean the shower while you shower.
- Wipe the sink after brushing your teeth.
- Start a load of laundry before breakfast.
- Set timers to move clothes to the dryer and to stop the dryer when done.
- Remove clothes from the dryer and hang them immediately — avoid piles.
- Empty the dishwasher before cooking or eating.
- Place dirty dishes straight into the dishwasher instead of piling them in the sink.
- Soak pots and pans right after cooking.
- Clear the table immediately after dinner.
- Start the dishwasher once dinner dishes are loaded.
These small habits add up and free time you can spend outside or relaxing.
6. Clean in a logical order
Tackle rooms in an order that prevents rework. For example, dust before vacuuming so you don’t stir up dust you just removed. In the kitchen, work top to bottom: wipe appliances and counters, sweep, then mop, finishing the floor as you exit the room. Thinking through the sequence saves effort and time.

7. Lighten your load
Fewer items mean less to tidy and maintain. Decluttering cabinets, closets, and surfaces reduces daily cleaning time and makes your home feel more open. Summer is a great season to sort through belongings, donate things you no longer need, or hold a sale. Even a few minutes a day clearing one drawer or shelf makes a noticeable difference over time.
With consistent routines, practical habits, and a bit of planning, you can keep your home comfortable without sacrificing summer fun. A cleaner house and more relaxation are both possible with speed cleaning.
