Hi, friends! Kylee here to share our brand new home office. My husband and I both work from home a few days a week, so we’re thrilled to finally have a dedicated workspace we truly enjoy.

For years this small room in our Seattle townhouse served as a guest room. After my sister moved into her own place, we relocated the guest bed and the room became a bit of a furniture holding area. It wasn’t attractive or functional, and I rarely wanted to spend time in there.

When my mom offered to help with a makeover using products from World Market, I was excited to transform it into a practical and inspiring home office. I love how it turned out — now it’s a space we look forward to using, and even our attitude about “going to work” has improved.

Let me show you around.

We started by emptying the room and applying a fresh coat of paint. Beginning with a blank slate allowed us to plan the layout and decide exactly what the space needed.

My goal was a functional yet light, airy room. The office sits on the third floor of our townhouse and the stairways have tight turns, so we chose furniture that could be easily carried up the stairs and assembled in the room. The space itself is small, so proportion and simplicity were key.

I adore the new desk. We’re fortunate to have a full closet in the room for office and craft supplies, which keeps the visible area uncluttered and streamlined. If we hadn’t had that storage, I might have chosen a desk with more drawers or added a rolling cart. The open style of this desk fits our needs and the small footprint of the room.

We fit two chairs, the desk and a small side table so both my husband Lance and I can work together without crowding the room.

Keeping furniture streamlined and minimizing clutter created space for plants, which add an organic touch. A strategically placed mirror also helps the room feel larger.

Practical accessories like a memo board, pencil cup, lidded containers and notebooks keep frequently used items organized and attractive on surfaces.

Even in a compact space, you don’t have to limit yourself to tiny pieces. At first I worried a rattan chair might feel too large, but it became the perfect statement piece. Its height adds visual interest and emphasizes the ceiling vault, while the open design prevents it from overpowering the room. It’s shallow enough to save floor space and pairs nicely with an oversized pouf for putting up my feet.

Bella loves cozy spots, so she and I have to take turns enjoying the chair.

This chair has become my morning coffee spot — a little sanctuary before the day begins. The laptop table is handy for sipping and checking email.

A linen rug placed diagonally ties the room together, adding color and texture. If you’re wondering whether it’s okay to layer a rug over carpet, I say yes — it distracts from carpet you don’t love and brings pattern and warmth to the space.

Leo is a fan of the office, too — he insisted on modeling on the rug.

It’s safe to say we all love the new office — dogs included. A little paint and a few carefully chosen pieces transformed the room, and I only wish we had done it sooner.
