HHello friends! How is everyone doing? It’s been one of those weeks where my to-do list seems to outpace my finished list, but I made room for a few small updates around the house that I’m excited to share.
I’ve been enjoying the new counter stools I picked up at Target for the kitchen island. They’re just the right size for quick chats, a casual snack, or a perch while I catch up with family.

I also rearranged the family room a bit. I moved the gold bamboo side tables from behind the sofa to flank the fireplace and paired them with new lamps I found at Target. The change created a more balanced, intentional look around that area.
For my birthday in January my daughter gave me a salvaged wood mirror from Restoration Hardware, and we finally hung it above the fireplace. It instantly became a focal point and I love how it anchors the space. It’s exactly the kind of statement I wanted for that wall.
Beyond the mirror, I have a longer-term plan to take the fireplace a step further by adding built-in bookcases and cabinets to surround it. Our house began as a fairly standard builder model, and I’ve been gradually adding details to bring more character and a cozy, finished feel to the rooms.

Updating the fireplace finishes and covering the TV niche already made a big difference in the room’s appearance. Those changes refreshed the whole wall and set a nice foundation for anything else I choose to add. My goal is to finish that area with a full wall of bookshelves and lower cabinets that will add both style and storage.

Built-ins will give the fireplace wall a bold architectural presence and make the room feel even cozier. They also provide practical storage for books, decor, and media components, helping keep surfaces clutter-free while showcasing favorite pieces.
I’ve collected a few ideas and inspiration photos and thought I’d share some of the looks I’m drawn to for this project. These images show a variety of approaches—symmetrical bookcases with cabinets below, built-ins with incorporated windows, and designs that balance open shelving with closed storage. Each option highlights how built-ins can transform a plain wall into a layered, intentional focal point.

I’ll be planning the layout, materials, and paint choices carefully to ensure the built-ins feel cohesive with the rest of the room. Whether I choose crisp white shelves for a traditional look or stained wood for warmth, the goal is the same: create practical, beautiful storage that highlights the fireplace as the room’s centerpiece.
Do you have built-ins in your home? I’d love to hear what you like most about them, or any tips you’ve learned if you’ve added custom shelving or cabinetry to your space.
