I treat my home as a sanctuary, a place away from the world where I feel safe. Yet the sound of the doorbell has always disturbed that calm. Even when there’s no reason to worry, the doorbell makes me uneasy. Ours rings for many harmless reasons: deliveries, family coming home without a key, solicitors, or a thoughtful neighbor stopping by to say our dogs Jack and Lily have slipped out and are wandering by the lake.
Although most visits are benign, I often avoid answering unless I’m expecting someone. With all the front windows and a covered porch, there’s no way to see who’s at the door without being seen, so I either risk revealing myself by looking out or wait for the person to leave—an awkward and sometimes unnerving choice when they persist.

Recently I started using a video doorbell that changed how secure and comfortable I feel at home. The device connects to a smartphone app so when someone presses the bell, my phone notifies me with a chime and lets me see who’s at the door without them seeing me. The two-way audio lets me speak to the visitor—giving instructions for a delivery or answering a neighbor—even if I’m not at home. A live video option lets me check the porch at any time, and a motion detector alerts me if someone approaches without ringing the bell. There’s also a silent mode so I can prevent the dogs from reacting to the chime. That feature alone preserves a lot of peace in the house.

Below are images showing my son at the door so you can see the doorbell camera in action.

The unit integrates with an existing mechanical door chime and installs in just a few minutes. Our setup required a small adapter to angle the camera correctly because the doorbell mount is set back from the doorway, but that adjustment made it easy to capture the whole porch.

I love having a video doorbell—being able to see and speak with visitors from anywhere brings real peace of mind. If you’re looking to improve home security and convenience, a smart video doorbell is an easy upgrade.
