A few weeks ago my mom, my two daughters and I set off for a girls’ day in Snohomish, Washington, a small town full of character and independent shops.
I’d never visited before, but several readers recommended it and I trusted their judgment. We treated the trip like a mini adventure—part sightseeing, part treasure hunt—since we’re still fairly new to Washington after moving from Portland. Exploring nearby towns this way makes our new home feel exciting and fresh.
The weather cooperated with bright sun and sunglasses all around. We started with coffee and sandwiches at a cozy diner to fuel our day, then spent the afternoon wandering First Street and popping into inviting shops. It was a delight to discover unique home accessories, clever displays and handmade items—many stores even smelled wonderful, adding to the charm. A few spots surprised us in other ways, which only made the day funnier.
Shopping with my girls is always full of laughter. We have a silly ritual: one of us will casually pick up something outrageously kitschy and carry it around until someone notices, at which point we dissolve into giggles. We know how to entertain ourselves, and those moments make ordinary shopping feel playful.
We wandered in and out of storefronts, enjoying the variety and the surprises that come from unplanned discoveries. Some shops stood out for their styling and creative displays, others for sweet treats and bakery aromas. Even without a strict plan or a list of favorites, the afternoon felt rewarding simply because we slowed down and enjoyed the stroll together.
These little day trips are my favorite kind of escape: leaving routine behind, getting fresh ideas and returning home refreshed and recharged. I always come away inspired—ready to try new decorating ideas or small creative projects—and happy to share the experience.
If you enjoy short local outings, Snohomish is a charming option for window shopping, café stops and relaxed time with friends or family. It’s a reminder that a simple day out can provide unexpected inspiration and a lot of laughter.
