I love the gentle sounds that surround our home. Laughter is my favorite, but when the house is quiet I notice birdsong outside the windows, wind moving through the trees, the rustle of palm leaves by the porch, soft background music, the gentle bubbling of my oil diffuser, and the delicate tinkling of capiz shell wind chimes hanging near the kitchen. Those small, consistent sounds make our house feel like a living, breathing space.

I try to slow down and listen for these peaceful details whenever I can. The way a home sounds is often overlooked, but it contributes as much to a sense of belonging as sight or touch.
Recently I ordered a set of three capiz shell wind chimes. When I unpacked them I didn’t expect how much they would change the feel of our outdoor space.
The day we hung them on the side porch it was very windy. The soft, musical tinkling of shells in the breeze just outside the kitchen felt unexpectedly magical and comforting.
You can watch a short video of the wind chimes above.

When my husband stood back and listened, he smiled and said, “OK, that’s it — we can never move!” I laughed, knowing we could take the chimes with us, but I understood what he meant. Small additions and meaningful moments make a place feel more like home.
Each meaningful object we add or experience we share here deepens our connection to this space and makes it feel more like home.
It really is the little things that accumulate into a sense of belonging.

Often a stronger connection to home and family comes through our senses. Over time, small positive experiences embed themselves into the atmosphere of our home and bring sustained joy.
My book Dwelling offers practical ideas and inspiration to cultivate well-being, peace, and joy in your home, body, and soul.

Similar wind chimes are available in a variety of styles to suit different porches and outdoor spaces.
