Meet the Dutch Door: Style, Function, and Timeless Charm

Yall, remodeling moves at its own pace. I’ve said it before, but this time I have an actual update: one of our projects is finished!

I still plan to do an official reveal of the hallway and Dutch door on a sunny day so I can style the space, hang art, and take all the pretty before-and-after photos. I’ll share the full details about the door and answer any questions you have. But since you’ve been so patient, here’s a little preview of one of the first completed projects.

I dreamed for a long time about having a Dutch door, and I can hardly believe the day has come — we now have a Dutch front door. She’s beautiful and exactly what I hoped for.

Remember how the hallway looked before? I love its refreshed look. We also replaced the lighting with porcelain stem-mount fixtures from Barnlight Electric, which suits the space perfectly.

There’s another Dutch door in the kitchen as well — I’m so excited about it. I won’t preview that one yet because I want to reveal it with the finished kitchen. That reveal is coming soon.

At this stage of a remodel you usually go through a punch list — the remaining items to finish or touch up. We’re at that point now. Some things still on our list include custom round window trim, final details on the new archways, and completing thresholds in the doorways. Often the rest are smaller fixes: aligning a door latch, securing an outlet, applying caulk, or doing paint touch-ups.

When you hire contractors, you make sure each detail is completed before final payment. But scheduling and coordinating multiple trades can take time, so those last items sometimes take longer than you expect.

I wish everyone was finished here so I could spend time puttering in the kitchen, but today feels like a small crew party: an electrician, a painter, and two contractors are all here. We’re genuinely close to the finish line — just inching toward those final details.

Hallway and door details:

  • Door color: Ozark Shadows by Benjamin Moore.
  • Hallway paint: Swan White by Glidden. (Other white walls in the house are Simply White by Benjamin Moore; we may eventually match the hallway to those walls.)
  • Door hardware: Baldwin knob and Deltana latch.
  • For the hallway’s earlier before-and-progress photos and details, see the previous makeover post on the same project.

Hope you enjoyed this little peek at our front Dutch door!

PS — In yesterday’s post I mentioned I planned to share a personal story about why creating a healthy, chemical-free home matters to me. I gathered more than I expected, so I need a bit more time to finish that post; I’ll link to it when it’s ready.
