I recently found an early blog post where I first wrote about puttering. It surprised me to realize that post was published 19 years ago.
I still can’t believe I’ve been blogging that long.
Here’s an excerpt from that original post:
After 21 years together, my husband and I finally discovered something — we enjoy puttering. For a long time I assumed we were simply obsessive about cleaning, disorganized, or bad at time management because we were often late.
I wondered what was wrong with us. Why didn’t we tackle the big tasks like cleaning out the garage? Why did it seem like everyone else accomplished more? Why were we ready and dressed yet still late to events? Over time it became clear: we are putterers (is that even a word?). That explained a lot.
Many days begin with a mental list of things to do. We anticipate a “busy” day, eat breakfast, make a latte, and before we know it…we’re puttering.
Reading that made me laugh.
But here’s the truth.
WE ARE STILL THE SAME WAY.
Back then we had toddlers and teens at home. Now we’re empty nesters with a couple of dogs. Seasons and circumstances change, but some habits remain.
We are still putterers.
Once you recognize that puttering is part of how you operate, it’s likely to stay with you. Puttering is simply how I move through my day — a relaxed, curious way of attending to small tasks and enjoying the process.
