Grasscloth-Inspired Decor: Texture Ideas for Walls and Rooms

Grasscloth EntrywayGood Housekeeping

In autumn I start craving the warm, tactile elements of home decor. Bright white walls feel fresh in summer, but as the days shorten they can seem cold without abundant light or texture to soften them. For instant cozy appeal, few finishes rival grasscloth wallpaper — its woven texture adds warmth and depth to any room.

When I moved into my 1930s English Tudor in Portland, the bedroom already had grasscloth on the walls. I adored it, though it had to be removed because of cigarette smoke. Even so, that experience left me with a lasting appreciation for grasscloth and a desire to use it again where a room calls for it.

Many people worry about wallpaper removal, and that concern is understandable. Older papers were glued on with very strong paste and could be difficult to strip. I’ve spent my share of time taking down wallpaper and it’s not my favorite task. The good news is modern papers and adhesives are generally easier to work with, and many manufacturers offer grasscloth products designed for more straightforward installation and removal.

I’m still learning what this house wants, but I can tell it would welcome grasscloth. The challenge is deciding which room will benefit most from that textured, enveloping feel.

Here are some ideas and inspiration rooms to help you decide — enjoy.
