Fall Nesting Ideas for 2009: Cozy Autumn Decorating Inspiration

My house is a bit chaotic right now. I feel scattered, un-domestic, and a little flustered — definitely not Martha. I’m caught between the long, lazy days of summer and the busy back-to-school rhythm. Still, I’m determined to summon my fall inspiration. I may not have pumpkin muffins in the oven or a wreath on the door yet, but I’m starting to shift into fall mode. I’m glad you’re here to join me.

Creating a beautiful home is often more about your attitude and state of mind than about perfection. I’m a dreamer who also accepts reality. When you blend the two, life becomes more satisfying. You can imagine your home smelling, looking, and feeling like fall even before every detail is in place — and little by little, you can make that vision real.

Last year I shared a post called 20 Little Things to Love About Autumn. If you need help getting into the fall spirit, start with that list — then write your own. Make a list of 20 things you love about autumn and join the 2009 Fall Nesting party by linking up your post, or simply share a few favorites in the comments here.

To me, fall is about nurturing.

My home might not be magazine-perfect (certainly not today!), but if I can create a feeling of fall — a sense that our home is a safe, nourishing place to rest, a warm spot to gather when life gets stormy — that is what matters most to me. Comfort, warmth, and hospitality are the heart of autumn decorating.

THE HOMEGOODS SHOPPING SPREE GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!

If you entered to win one of three $200 HomeGoods shopping sprees, you could have linked a post showing the room you want to refresh this fall and explained how a HomeGoods gift card would help. Non-bloggers could email entries with “HOMEGOODS ENTRY” in the subject line so they wouldn’t get lost.

This post and the links today are all about Fall Nesting — we’re gearing up to enjoy a season that always feels too short. Let’s make the most of it and get fall started!
