Design Your Dream Home: Modern Ideas & Inspiration Guide

Do you have a dream house?

Have you pictured a dream house—the one you would buy in an instant if money and logistics weren’t an issue?

I have a few dream houses in my head, actually, which makes choosing just one a delightful problem. Each inspires different ideas, so I don’t mind the indecision.

This charming home was HGTV’s Dream Home for 2013, and it’s easy to see why. The setting, the finishes and the thoughtful details make it a place many of us would be happy to call home.

I enjoy looking at stunning houses and imagining possibilities, but that doesn’t mean I’m dissatisfied with my own space. I try to create a version of my dream house within the limits I have, and I find practical, affordable ideas in the process.

Big, beautiful homes can momentarily spark envy—property taxes and price tags do come to mind—but after that initial reaction I get inspired instead of discouraged.

When I study a gorgeous home I look for elements I can adapt: color palettes, texture combinations, layering of patterns, furniture arrangements, and lighting choices. Small details — curtain styles, rug placement, hardware, even bedside accessories — often spark ideas that are achievable on a modest budget.

Exterior features and landscaping are just as inspiring. They remind me that simple changes to paint, trim or plantings can dramatically alter a home’s curb appeal. The goal becomes translating those looks to a scale that fits my life and budget.

I selected some of my favorite rooms from the HGTV Dream Home to share here. Each photo highlights ideas you can borrow: a bold wall color, an unexpected texture, a cozy bedding combination, or an outdoor detail that elevates the whole property. Even if you can’t recreate every element, adapting a few touches can refresh your space.

Happy dreaming!
PS: All the blinds in my kitchen are now installed—high fives to my husband for his DIY help. I’ll be sharing the kitchen reveal very soon.
