WWith the holidays approaching, the kitchen becomes the center of activity again. That means we suddenly notice the things we’ve been ignoring: peeling paint, cramped storage, outdated finishes and decor, and other flaws we tolerated all summer.

I often kick into high gear on decorating or remodeling projects just before the holidays (or right before listing a house). Deadlines push me past perfectionism and indecision so I can focus on practical progress.
I tackle the tasks that have been lingering: hanging pictures, making minor repairs, touching up paint, and finishing creative solutions that were waiting for the right moment.
Working with a limited budget and items I already own forces creativity. The solutions that come from constraints make a space feel unique and personal. More often than not, the finished room becomes one I love even more because of the inventive choices I made.
If you want to add creative energy to your kitchen before guests arrive, here are some photos and ideas to inspire you.

Inspiration for a Creative & Unique Kitchen:
- Bring in a desk or dresser to add storage and extra workspace—these pieces mix function with personality.
- Introduce color and pattern: painted cabinets, stained glass accents, a chandelier, or a checkerboard floor can dramatically shift the mood.
- Refresh with accessories—new or vintage items can quickly enliven a tired space without a full remodel.
- Search salvage yards and reclaiming centers for interesting architectural pieces or hardware that add character.
- Rethink what you already own: an old bookshelf can become a charming china cabinet or open pantry.
