Create a Cozy Winter Felt Wreath: Step-by-Step DIY Guide

DIY felt wreathDo you remember my square felt garland from last year? I reinvented it this season into something I love even more: a Winter Felt Wreath.

The garland was pretty but shorter than I wanted, so I wasn’t using it. Rather than buy more felt or cut more squares, I decided to transform the existing garland into a wreath.

I stopped by Michaels to pick up a wreath frame and some floral wire. The extra supplies cost only a few dollars and were all I needed to finish the project.

I adore this wreath not only because of its soft, cozy look, but because it was truly easy to make. No fancy sewing, hot glue, or complicated techniques required.

Cutting the squares took the most time, mostly because I was using dull scissors. The squares don’t need to be perfect — the slightly imperfect edges add to the wreath’s fluffy charm. Attaching the garland to the frame only took a couple of minutes.

There are hundreds of squares in the garland; I lost count while assembling the wreath, but you’ll need many to get a full, textured look.

How to make a felt wreath

Gather plenty of felt in the colors you like. I used white, cream, and taupe, but any palette will work. Cut roughly 2-inch squares — they don’t have to be exact. If you have sharp sewing scissors the job goes faster, but imperfect cuts give a nice handmade feel.

Thread a needle with strong white dental floss and string the squares together to build your garland. This is simple and works well because the floss is sturdy and thin.

Lay the completed garland around a wreath frame (I used a wooden frame). At this stage you can add a hanging ribbon to the frame so the wreath is ready to display when finished, or plan to hang it with a hook.

I photographed the project at night, so the images look a bit dark — apologies for that. Winter evenings do make daylight scarce!

Secure the garland to the frame with floral craft wire. I used white wire and began fastening in the middle of the garland, wrapping the wire around the floss and frame at several points to keep the wreath evenly round. Tie the wire snugly so the felt compresses slightly and the shape holds.

Trim and tuck the wire ends when you’re finished securing the garland to the frame.

When you reach the ends of the garland, trim off any excess squares so the garland fits snugly. Tie the floss ends together and fasten that seam to the wreath frame so it blends in with the rest of the design.

I added a small bell for a festive touch, but that’s optional. You could swap in a different ornament or leave the wreath plain for a subtler look.
