I love those delightful little corners in a home. Older houses often have charming nooks, quirky stairwells, narrow hallways or small pockets of space that create character and warmth. Our home follows a more conventional layout, so most rooms are simple rectangles. Still, we have a tiny spot tucked beside the half wall and pillars that separate the kitchen from the family room — and similar openings by the dining room and front room — that I’ve come to appreciate.
At first glance this corner seems almost too small to matter. It’s easy to overlook and might even appear like a place you’d leave empty so the room doesn’t feel crowded. But I think adding a touch of personality and function to one small corner can make a space feel cozier and more complete. I don’t like to overcrowd corners, which can create clutter, but a single plant, a compact table or a chair can add that unexpected, comforting detail.
Do you have a small, overlooked corner that could use a little charm? Keep an eye out for that one piece that can transform even the tiniest areas of your home.
I picked up this table years ago (I believe it was from Lamps Plus) and it’s become a favorite. I enjoy furniture with visual interest, the kind you can admire as you pass by. This table is especially fun to look at from the side, so I’m glad it’s positioned where we can see one face of it.
PS. I’m glad to be back after a few days away! It was an unusually busy week finishing some exciting projects (I’ll be sharing details soon), followed by a weekend trip to Portland with my husband for a conference. Thank you to everyone who kept the conversation going with your comments and stories on the last Get to Know You post — I loved reading them!
