Cozy Fall Porch Ideas with Lantern Lighting

RI mentioned earlier that hospitality and joy aren’t cancelled and encouraged decorating front porches. I went ahead and decorated mine, and it really brightened the entry. A simple copper pot of vivid mums and a few pumpkins can lift your spirits — and hopefully your neighbors’ too.

I created a small fall vignette inside my porch lantern using a handful of mini pumpkins, some wheat-like “bunny tail” foliage, and copper wire string lights. The effect is cozy and seasonal without being fussy.

Our porch is compact, so I aim for simple, affordable touches that still make an impact. Less clutter lets each piece shine and keeps the entrance welcoming.

The color of these mums is stunning — deep, rich, and full of autumnal warmth.

I also assembled a small door basket with a few plants to add texture and color beside the entry.

The lantern looks particularly charming at night when the string lights glow; I’ll try to capture a better nighttime photo to share soon.

Lantern Sources:

The exact lantern I used is currently sold out, but here are a few similar options. My lantern included a hanging mechanism so we could attach it directly to the house, but any of these styles can be hung with a simple lantern hook.

Brass Wide Neck Lantern (works beautifully filled with pumpkins and faux gourds)

Square black lantern (a classic option)

Curved black lantern (for a softer silhouette)

I previously shared more styling ideas for non-electric outdoor wall lanterns in another post, which includes creative ways to dress lanterns for different seasons.

Door basket (I used the larger size)

Copper battery-operated string lights with timer and remote — perfect for a soft evening glow.

Copper planter — adds warmth and pairs nicely with fall tones.

Similar doormat (a welcoming “yay you’re here” sentiment).

Wheat / bunny tail fall foliage — great for texture and a natural look.

Dutch door details and FAQ (if your door has unique hardware or features).
