Cottage-Style Pillow Pairings for Spring & Summer Living Rooms

Thank you to Pottery Barn for gifting the beautiful pillows and throws shown here.

While we wait for the new rug and final living room pieces (I’ll share those soon!), I spent some time this week playing with cottage-style pillow pairings and a cozy throw—perfect for spring and summer.

A few new pillows can completely refresh a room. Here I share how I mix colors and patterns for a seasonal update, featuring new finds from Pottery Barn.

I’m loving our new sofa and have had fun styling it. It’s been a treat to try different pillow combinations while we wait for the rest of the room to come together.

Classic stripes make mixing and matching effortless. They pair beautifully with florals and solids, giving you endless seasonal combinations. I’m already imagining fall and winter looks, too.

Pottery Barn offers a lovely selection of pillows and throws. They make it simple to build a collection you’ll enjoy rotating for years.

I couldn’t resist trying a few florals on my striped sofa—mixing scales and textures creates a fresh, cottage-inspired feel.

Each pillow looks great solo, and every combination reads as charming together. Many are reversible, which doubles your styling choices.

Even in a small space, swapping pillows is an easy and effective way to refresh a room for each season.

Sticking to a cohesive color palette while using different pattern scales makes mixing and matching easy. Adding solids gives you even more versatile looks that carry through seasons.

Pattern Mixing Design Tip

I love the linen pillow on the built-in bench: one side is soft white and the other is a warm taupe, so it adapts to different arrangements.

Seeing a patterned reverse peek out of a pillow or the flip side of a throw adds a delightful design detail. It gives character and invites a closer look.

Reversible pieces are also practical—if pillows get moved around by kids, pets, or guests, they still look intentional no matter which side is showing.

I recently added a red floral pillow with a charming stripe on the reverse, which looks lovely on the dining room bench. Now that we have two built-in benches, there are even more spots to style pillows—more pairings to come.

Happy spring decorating!
