Many years ago my mother installed a deep white sink with a black underside in our beach house laundry room. I loved it from the start, and ever since I’ve kept an eye out for a chance to use a similar sink in my own home.

One handy tip I learned while working on our English Tudor is that the underside of sinks, tubs, heat registers and even furniture can be powder coated. Powder coating gives metal surfaces a durable, renewed finish and lets you change the color to better suit your decor.
With so many color options available, powder coating opens the door to creative, cohesive design details.

Even when trough sinks are new, many of them get their distinctive colored undersides through powder coating. We had all the boiler wall registers in our 1930s house powder coated when we moved in. They were clogged with old paint and grime and looked unsalvageable, but after a professional powder coat they looked almost new—durable and refreshed.
A trough sink is definitely on my list of must-haves. I can’t think of a more charming, useful addition to a bathroom or laundry space.
